Holmesglen is committed to providing an environment for students where free intellectual enquiry and freedom of expression is protected and encouraged, academic integrity is promoted, and the rights and responsibilities of students, employees and Holmesglen are respected.

As members of Holmesglen community, students must conduct themselves in a manner consistent with Holmesglen values and standards of behaviour when undertaking academic or other activities.

Students must take responsibility for their learning

  • Make themselves aware of and comply with all relevant Holmesglen policies and procedures concerning their enrolment, studies and conduct at Holmesglen.
  • Read and comply with their subject/unit and course requirements.
  • Take responsibility for their own learning and wellbeing, and seeking support and/or assistance from Holmesglen academics and/or support services when required.
  • Provide accurate personal details to Holmesglen; keep those details up to date; and read and respond where required to all official Holmesglen correspondence including email.
  • Be committed to their studies: attend classes on time, participate during classroom activities, and complete all tasks allocated to them and submit their work on time.
  • Adhere to the policies, procedures and rules of external organisations while on placement, practicum, work experience, fieldwork or educational exchange.

Students must act with honesty and integrity

  • Undertake their academic work with integrity and honesty, avoiding breaches of academic integrity and copyright.
  • Work cooperatively and collaboratively with other students, staff, associates and Holmesglen partners.
  • Not engage or collude in fraudulent or corrupt behaviour, or any unlawful behaviour, and report such behaviour as outlined in Holmesglen policies and procedures.
  • Declare conflict of interest matters or a matter which has the potential to influence decisions in their interest, or declare a matter which could be perceived to influence decisions in their interest.
  • Not do anything which may bring Holmesglen into disrepute including by making or publishing false or misleading statements relating to Holmesglen.

Students must act with respect and fairness

  • Interact in a polite and respectful manner with all students and staff of Holmesglen at all times.
  • Communicate with courtesy and consideration, verbally and in writing, in person and online (including through email and social media).
  • Provide considered and honest feedback to Holmesglen and its staff on the quality of learning and teaching and its services.
  • Respect the privacy of other students and staff.
  • Respect others' rights to their own opinions and beliefs and, where there is disagreement, engage only in respectful discussion.
  • Refrain from actions, behaviour and words (both written and spoken) that may jeopardise their own or another student or staff member's health, safety or wellbeing, or may damage their reputation or career.
  • Not engage in discrimination, sexual assault, sexual harassment, victimisation, bullying, child abuse or any form of interpersonal, psychological or physical violence, and report such behaviour as outlined in Holmesglen policies and procedures.
  • Not disclose information identified as confidential concerning any matter relating to Holmesglen.
  • Avoid disrupting or interfering with any teaching, learning, research or other academic activity of Holmesglen. This includes not being rude or using inappropriate language or such behaviour that may cause a staff member or another student to feel uncomfortable or threatened.
  • Not impair the rights of others to participate in any legitimate Holmesglen activity.
  • Not encourage, persuade or incite others to engage in conduct or behaviour constituting misconduct in accordance with Holmesglen policies and procedures.

Students must contribute to a healthy and safe learning environment

  • Not cause harm to others, endanger or potentially endanger the safety or health of others.
  • Be free from the influence of alcohol and/or drugs on Holmesglen premises
  • Not use, possess or supply a prohibited weapon or any prohibited substance at Holmesglen premises
  • Use Holmesglen property or resources, including communication technology resources, cooperatively, legally, ethically responsibly and appropriately
  • Respect the property rights of others, including students and staff, whilst on Holmesglen premises
  • Comply with any reasonable request or directions from Holmesglen staff with regard to safety or compliance with policy, procedure or ethical requirements, or to provide name or age or show proof of identity or age or student identity card.

Students studying in Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Qualifications
If you are a Holmesglen student and undertaking study in a Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Qualification, you must also refer to the Holmesglen VCAL Student Handbook for specific information that will apply to you.

1. Below are a set of links to important information that will assist you with your understanding of your rights and obligations.    
2. As a Holmesglen student you may be eligible to receive assistance from the Commonwealth Government for paying your tuition fees with a Higher Education Loan Program (HELP) for a Higher Education (HE) course or a VET Student Loan for an approved Vocational Education and Training (VET) course. Read more about how you can access help with fees.
Information on Tuition Fees can be found on the course pages on Holmesglen’s website.  This information is indicative only, as everyone's circumstances are different.
You should be aware that:
  • As an eligible student you may be able to access a HELP Loan or a VET Student Loan, is to assist you with the cost of your tuition fees.
  • HELP Loans and VET Student Loans are income contingent loans from the Commonwealth Government, available to eligible students and, when granted, remain your personal debt obligation until it is repaid to the Commonwealth Government.
  • Accessing HELP Loans and VET Student Loans may affect your future take-home (after tax) wage or salary (by reducing the wage or salary to pay off the loan), and may affect your borrowing capacity until the debt is repaid.
  • You may wish to seek independent financial advice prior to applying for a HELP Loan or a VET Student Loan.
  • To access a HELP Loan or a VET Student Loan to assist you to pay your tuition fees, you will need to meet the eligibility requirements, accept your enrolment offer, indicate your wish to access a HELP Loan or a VET Student Loan and apply for the HELP Loan or VET Student Loan prior to census dates.

  • You are required to complete the Request for Commonwealth Assistance Form provided to you or you will be directed to complete the online Request for Commonwealth Assistance Form.
  • If you do not complete your Request for Commonwealth Assistance for access to a HELP Loan or a VET Student Loan prior to the census dates you will have to wait until the next part of the course to request for a HELP Loan or a VET Student Loan.
  • Census dates will apply to each subject/unit in which you enrol. A census date is the last day by which you may withdraw from the subject/unit without incurring a debt. Read more about census dates. 
  • If you withdraw from a course or part/s of a course on or before the census date you will not incur a HELP Loan or a VET Student Loan debt.
  • You may be eligible for a re-credit of your HELP Loan or VET Student Loan amount if you withdraw from your course or part/s of the course after the Census Date if you had experienced special circumstances. Find out more about refunds or re-credit of HELP Loans.
  • Information on HELP Loans, VET Student Loans, Loans Fees, Loan limits and Loan balances are available to you on the Australian Government's StudyAssist Website.
  • Note that, if you are enrolling in Vocational Education and Training Approved Courses at the Diploma, Advanced Diploma Graduate Certificate or Graduate Diploma levels, you may be eligible to access a VET Student Loan. In such instances, Holmesglen will provide your enrolment information to the Commonwealth Government. You will then receive information from the Government allowing you to complete and submit your request for a VET Student Loan via the online eCAF system prior to the census date. Refer to VET Student Loans Entry Procedure for eligibility to access VET Student Loans. You must read the VET Student Loans Information Booklet  prior to applying for a VET Student Loan and be aware of your obligations.
  • If you have been granted access to VET Student Loans to assist you to pay your tuition fees for the course or part/s of the course in which you are enrolled, from the 1 July 2017 you are required to confirm your engagement for study. The Commonwealth Government will contact you to seek your confirmation of engagement in study. Your confirmation will enable you to continue to access VET Student Loans up to the capped loan amount for the approved course in which you are enrolled.
3. You also have the right to access educational and support services for the duration of your study at Holmesglen. Refer to the following for more information:
As a student at Holmesglen you have an obligation to take reasonable care for your health and safety and that of others. You may seek assistance on any matters while studying at Holmesglen and, if you have any concerns regarding your well-being or safety or that of others you must report this to your teacher, Student Services or to the Security Office on campus.
4. You will have access to electronic resources , research and referencing and how to guides. Find out more about the library resources and services available. 
5. Access to Electronic Devices and Technology
As a student at Holmesglen you must ensure that you have organised access to electronic devices and technology that allows you to work in an online environment, this includes access to the internet, so that you can fully participate in the course in which you are enrolled for study.View the Online Services Standards  and the Online learning tools for more information.
6. Studying off-campus
When enrolling into a course for study off campus, you should ensure that you have access to the required resources and equipment that will assist you to successfully complete the course.  View the range of online services here.
7. Placement activities
Placement activities include workplace based learning, internships, clinical placements, work experience or field work that form part of the course requirements. The purpose of these activities are to provide you with relevant work experiences within the industry. Prior to commencing such activities you must sign an agreement with Holmesglen and the workplace employer. You will be made aware of your obligations prior to undertaking such activities. The Placement Agreement may be terminated at any time if these obligations are not met.
8. You may be requested to provide your written permission for the use of your materials or images in which you are referenced or appear. Such materials or images maybe used in promotions and publications for Holmesglen educational activities. Your written permission will be held at Holmesglen.
9. As a student at Holmesglen, you may undertake study in a course that is delivered on behalf of Holmesglen by a third party. You will be made aware of such arrangements during the admissions and registration for enrolment processes. You will also be provided with information relating to any changes of this arrangement. In the event that the third party is unable to fulfil this commitment, Holmesglen will honour your enrolment as a Holmesglen student for completion of study for the relevant course.
10. As an enrolled student you may be requested to participate in the National Centre for Vocational Education Research (NCVER) survey and/or receive an invitation to participate in a Department endorsed project/annual student outcome survey. You may also be contacted by the Department (or persons authorised by the Department) for audit or review or investigations purposes.
