Health and Medical Training

Recognised for our innovative partnership in healthcare training, particularly in delivering industry-relevant education and practical skills to the healthcare workforce.

The Epworth HealthCare and Holmesglen Institute collaboration is a template for the successful integration of a full-cycle of education leading directly into industry. From curriculum design through to student placements, employment and continuing professional development opportunities, the collaboration fosters a shared vision and culture of nurturing student nurses towards delivering the best healthcare outcomes for all Victorians.

Epworth Healthcare and Holmesglen established a joint partnership 17 years ago to improve learning outcomes of VET Diploma of Nursing students. Now Epworth Healthcare annually enables over 200 Holmesglen Diploma of Nursing students to access their large private hospital campuses where students have an opportunity to experience extensive services and a variety of patient conditions.

To ensure student success in completing their nursing qualification, Epworth Healthcare and Holmesglen traverse those extra corridors to help those who might struggle with their placement due to health or other personal issues, supporting them with a tailored student-centered framework. The results are a pipeline of quality nurse graduates that are familiar with Epworth’s processes and culture, ready to serve the community’s health needs.

Electrical Apprenticeships and Gender Diversity

The project successfully trained and placed numerous women into apprenticeships across the industry, addressing significant gaps in female participation in the sector.

These two respective awards acknowledged the pioneering efforts to increase women’s participation in electrical apprenticeships through training, mentorship, and support.

Seeing an opportunity to grow women participation in the electrical trades, the Women in Apprenticeships Victoria Electrical (WAVE) project commenced.

The project is a collaboration between the Victorian Electrical Trades Union, Holmesglen Institute, Trades Hall Council, Australian Women in Solar Energy, and the Victorian Department of Education and Training.

A targeted, holistic approach was taken from engagement to placement, supported by strategies to attract, recruit, train, support and retain women into electrical apprenticeships.

The program provided participants with a women-only pre-apprenticeship course, access to apprenticeship opportunities and support for apprentices to transition into the industry, with a focus on multi-layered mentoring.

The program was a success, with 94% of participants completing the pre-apprenticeship program, and of these, 77% secured employment as an electrical apprentice. Many of the participants see a future in the industry and are now undertaking their UEE30820 Certificate III in Electrotechnology with Holmesglen Institute.

The WAVE collaboration creates a strong brand for the electrical industry as one that welcomes inclusion and diversity.

Construction and Urban Development

Recognised for significant contributions to the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project, providing specialised training for hundreds of apprentices and workers to develop critical infrastructure skills.

Recognising that Victoria is experiencing one of the greatest infrastructure booms in the nation's history, three construction companies (Lendlease, John Holland and Bouygues) have partnered with Holmesglen to upskill Victorians to meet the needs of one of the major infrastructure projects in Victoria’s Big Build program, the Metro Tunnel Project.

Its twin strategies are MetroHub, a project-specific jobs and training centre, and the Victorian Tunnelling Centre, a national-first tunnelling training centre that combines real-life machine training and simulated tunnelling training environments.

Both strategies aim to make training more accessible to all people, including priority job seekers from disadvantaged backgrounds.

Health and Medical Sciences

Honoured for the collaborative development of new health education models, emphasising critical skills for hospital-based roles.

Working together towards a common vision, the Royal Children’s Hospital and Holmesglen Institute created an enriching pathway to employment for young people with disability.

Australia’s first Integrated Practical Placement Program is an innovative model combining industry, education and support services. Students enthusiastically perform roles that fulfil a business need and contribute to the hospital’s daily operations.

The program includes unpaid work placements of six months, and where possible, participants are supported to transition into paid employment.

Piloted in 2018, the program exemplifies how barriers can be overcome through the effective partnering of education with industry. Results to date show that 80 per cent of students gained employment, with others pursuing further studies.

Health and Medical Sciences

The collaboration introduced a hospital into a once underserviced community, created 750 nursing and allied health positions, enhanced opportunities for students, and established a facility for collaborative applied research, which includes a joint clinical chair.

In 2011, Holmesglen Institute launched a five-storey health science facility with a state-of-the-art simulation centre. We partnered with Healthscope, a private hospital healthcare provider and created a unique symbiotic health and education precinct. An onsite hospital was a first for Australia and took training and skills development in a TAFE environment beyond traditional boundaries.

The Holmesglen Healthscope collaboration introduced a hospital into a once underserviced community, created 750 nursing and allied health positions, enhanced opportunities for students, and established a facility for collaborative applied research which includes a joint clinical chair.

Holmesglen's partnerships and industry links are vital elements of the project's success.

Electrical Training and Apprenticeships

Supporting the current and next generation of electrical professionals.

Futuretech was created in response to the Industry Skills Council’s recommendation for a pioneering training centre to pilot innovative programs to drive the training of tomorrow’s skilled electrical and electro technology workers.

Hearing the call, the Electrical Trade Union (ETU) Victoria and Holmesglen Institute of TAFE partnered to develop an agile education and training provider with the ability to develop and adapt learning programs according to industry needs.

In 2016 Futuretech – a $3.4 million state-of-the-art integrated training facility for the electrical and electro technology – opened its doors at the ETU’s head office in North Melbourne.

Futuretech offers 19 accredited and professional development courses in electro technology, telecommunications, cabling, OH&S and testing.

In one Futuretech program, the ETU identified that the industry would benefit from a program with a mental health focus. Collaborating with Holmesglen’s Health Sciences faculty, a customised one-day Mental Health in the Construction and Electrical Workplace program was developed.

In 2016, Futuretech enrolled 25 pre-apprentices and 29 apprentices and by May 2017, 30 preapprentices and 51 apprentices had enrolled. The Centre achieved more than 70 apprentice enrolments at the end of 2017.
