Students and their families will be aware of the outbreak of Novel Coronavirus (Covid-19) in mainland China. Cases have been reported predominantly in the city of Wuhan, in the Hubei province of China, as well as in other Chinese cities and in other countries, including several confirmed cases here in Victoria, Australia.
The Australian Government has advised of the extension of additional border measures "to deny entry to Australia to people who have left or transited through mainland China from 1 February 2020, with the exception of Australian citizens, permanent residents and their immediate family and air crews who have been using appropriate personal protective equipment.”
If Holmesglen students or staff have travelled from mainland China or been in close contact of a confirmed case of coronavirus, special restrictions apply.
Based on the advice from Australia’s Chief Medical Officer:
If you have been in mainland China on or after 1 February 2020 (not including Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan), please do not return to campus for 14 days after you were last in mainland China, and isolate yourself for 14 days from leaving mainland China.
This recommendation does not apply retrospectively. It applies only to those who were in mainland China on or after 1 February 2020.
If you have been in close contact with a person who has a confirmed case of coronavirus, please do not return to campus for 14 days from your last contact with them, and isolate yourself for 14 days after the date of last contact with the confirmed case.
Holmesglen's International Centre is directly contacting international students from mainland China. The Study Melbourne websites and Study in Australia website are also providing useful updates.
Any planned student or staff visits to China have been postponed until further notice.
The Health and safety of students and staff on our campuses remains our prime priority. As this situation is evolving, the Australian Government may release new advice over the coming days and weeks. Factsheets for students and parents are available at the Department of Education, Skills and Employment's Novel coronavirus (2019-nCoV) news page.
