Studying the Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance (Nutrition and Dietetic Support) at Holmesglen

During your studies, you will gain a detailed understanding of nutritional needs, understand how the body works and metabolises food, and develop skills to evaluate meal plans and adjust them for individual requirements.<p>Learn about different cultures, how food needs may change when illness arises, or if a person is diagnosed with allergies or intolerances.<p>Spend time in one of our commercial kitchens using the nutrition theory you learn to create specialised dietary food, therapeutic juices, superfood delights and nutrient dense meals. <p>Create sweet desserts made without sugar and delicious, highly nutritious snacks and smoothie supplements.<p>Apply your new knowledge and skills in our Wellness Centre and out in the health industry such as Aged Care facilities or Hospitals, where you will complete up to 120 hours assisting dietitians and nutritionists where possible and working and liaising with chefs to meet the dietary needs of clients.<p>Practical Placement is a key component for this qualification. It is a structured program designed to give all students of the HLT43021 Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance, a true ‘hands on’ experience prior to entering the industry. Practical placement is designed to bridge the gap between study and employment.<p>This comprehensive course also includes study of mental health and chronic disease to help you understand the whole person and their health needs. You will also learn how to screen clients for malnutrition and dietary assessment.<p>This program has compulsory activities/materials as part of the learning experience. The department will confirm the cost of these activities/materials prior to your enrolment. You will also be required to provide a Working with Children Check.

Entry Requirements

Applicants must be aged at least 18 at course commencement. You will also be required to provide a Working with Children Check.
Prior to undertaking clinical placement, students will need to provide evidence of:<br>- HLTAID011 Provide First Aid. This will need to occur externally at the student's own cost (approximately $100)<br>- student health and immunisation status (costs will vary but is usually between $100 and $500)<br>- complete a National Police Records Check annually (between $25 - $50)<br>- hold a valid Working with Children Check for employees (approximately $130)
Learners are assessed prior to enrolment to determine level of support required during pre-training review for Learning skills, disability, well-being and other support services. No selection requirements external to the training package requirements.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Course Structure

Timetable

Students engage with Holmesglen three – four days per week (depending on the Semester), for six hours per day with the classes being both practical and theoretical in nature. The classes are combined face to face on campus and virtual off campus “clustered” classes. <p>To receive this qualification, you must complete 18 units in total, comprising of 10 core units and 8 elective units. Elective units have been chosen to support the vocational outcome of the nutrition and dietetics specialisation in the HLT43021 Certificate IV in Allied Health Assistance course.
