Studying the Diploma of Outdoor Leadership at Holmesglen

You will focus on developing the capabilities required to plan, organise and deliver an outdoor adventure program for a wide range of clientele, using a variety of outdoor activities. You will develop camp and expedition management skills including group leadership and campsite catering, allowing you to guide and teach others.<p>The course is ideal for those that are currently working or who have an interest in outdoor recreation and adventure activities, and anyone who is enthusiastic about outdoor activities like hiking, rock climbing, camping, white water rafting, challenge high rope courses and canoeing. As part of the course, students are required to complete several vocational, practical experiences in the outdoor recreation/adventure tourism industry.

Entry Requirements

Holmesglen requires all students to have a student interview prior to the course commencement to assess suitability for the course. Holmesglen requires the learner to be able to commit to off campus field excursions (that may be overnight) throughout the year.<p>Holmesglen requires students to be 18 years of age by February 1 of next course commencement year. Students should also have the physical capacity to be able to successfully work within the field where they may be required to assist with outdoor leadership equipment, while making sure they are following all Manual Handling WHS legislation. Learners should also have a<p>- A desire to further progress your outdoor leadership<br>- A desire and interest in the outdoors and nature<br>- A mature attitude and approach to study <p>Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training review at an interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.
There are prerequisite studies for two of the units of competency within the program. Students are required to complete or have attained SISORSC004 Self rescue in white water before you can commence and complete SISORSC005 Rescue others in white water and SISORSC006 Lead and participate in complex white water rescues.<p>Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Course Structure

Timetable

Students engage with Holmesglen four days per week, for six hours per day with the classes being both practical and theoretical in nature. The classes are combined face to face on campus and virtual off campus 'clustered' classes when required, as well as off campus field excursions.<p>To receive this qualification, you must complete 29 units, which comprise of 13 core units and 16 elective units. <br>Elective units with the program are based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications. <p>If learners have already completed other eligible elective units, these may be counted towards completion of this course.<p>The course structure is 4 days a week for approximately 6 hours per day, over 2 Semesters. It includes off campus field excursions (that may be overnight) of up to 80 days per year throughout the year.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.
