Studying the Certificate III in Dental Assisting at Holmesglen

Throughout this hands-on course, you'll develop practical skills in infection control, patient care, and administrative duties, as well as assist dentists, dental prosthetists, dental therapists, or dental hygienists during oral health care procedures. You will also gain experience in recognising and responding to oral health issues, maintaining oral hygiene for patients, and ensuring the smooth operation of a dental practice.<p>Training will take place in purpose-built facilities designed to simulate a real dental workplace. You will be involved in preparing patients for dental procedures, preparing dental materials, processing X-rays, using suction devices and water sprays, performing routine maintenance on equipment, sterilising, and preventing cross-infection of equipment.<p>The training is carried out by our highly qualified dental staff.<p>The course also includes important skills such as communication, first aid, infection control, work, health and safety processes (WHS), and working with diverse people.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, students must be at least 18 years of age.
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Course Structure

Timetable

Learners must attend campus for 13 weeks, after which they will complete a mandatory 300-hour clinical placement, organised by the Holmesglen Clinical Placement Office.<br>The HLT35021 Certificate III in Dental Assisting has four stages covering a total of 10 units:<br><strong> Stage 1</strong> (5 weeks): delivered face-to-face in the classroom or simulation lab, focusing on:<br>o HLTWHS001 - Participate in workplace health and safety<br>o CHCCOM005 - Communicate and work in health or community services<br>o CHCDIV001 - Work with diverse people<br>o HLTDEN017 - Assist with administration in dental practice<br>o This stage concludes with HLTAID011 - Provide First Aid.<br><strong>Stage 2</strong> (3 weeks, 3 days per week, 7 hours per day): Delivered in person in the dental simulation lab, covering:<br>• HLTINF006 - Apply infection prevention and control principles<br>• HLTINF002 - Process reusable medical devices and equipment<br>• HLTDEN015 - Prepare and assist with dental procedures.<br><strong>Stage 3</strong>(2 weeks, 1 day per week, 7 hours per day): Focuses on HLTDEN016 - Assist with dental radiography, teaching learners to prepare patients, take x-rays, and process and mount dental radiographs.<br><strong>Stage 4 </strong>(3 weeks, 1 day per week, 7 hours per day): Covers HLTDEN028 - Provide oral hygiene training, teaching learners to advise patients on personalized oral hygiene practices and products.<p>Following these stages, learners will complete their clinical placement over a 10-month period, tracking hours in a clinical placement portfolio, with daily feedback and sign-off from a mentor.<p>The placement includes three linked units: HLTDEN015, HLTINF002, and HELDTEN106. A Holmesglen trainer will conduct a final workplace assessment, where the learner will complete three full client sessions for observation assessment.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

Traineeship
