Studying the Certificate III in Flooring Technology (Timber) at Holmesglen

Holmesglen has been training Flooring Technology apprentices for over 15 years. Training is delivered in our specially designed facilities, with a focus on providing hands-on, practical training.<p>Training in this stream focuses on the installation of timber, parquetry, laminate and bamboo flooring, including restoration of original timber floors.<p>Flooring technology will see you working in both domestic and commercial sites, and on renovation projects.<p>Holmesglen offers flooring technology apprenticeship training in four streams. Apprentices can seek overall knowledge and skills or focus solely on specialty areas: General, Carpet, Timber or Resilient.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, students must be at least 16 years of age.<p>Training agreement with a registered employer from the flooring industry..
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and to attend a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. Course Structure

Timetable

The program is structured over 21 hours of training per week across a total of 22 block training sessions over three years.<p>In Year One, focus is on foundational core units, which emphasise navigating safety requirements, developing effective communication skills and learning to work collaboratively within a team. Then progressing to more hands-on activities with assessing the condition of existing flooring, safely removing old materials and preparing surfaces for new installations. <p>In Year Two, the course builds upon the knowledge and skills acquired during the first year, with a focus on measuring, costing and planning for jobs, followed by practical activities such as installing engineered timber and direct stick timber flooring.<p>In Year Three, focus is on more specialised techniques, such as installing mosaic and parquetry flooring and applying stains and coatings to timber flooring.

Assessment

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

How to apply

Apprenticeship

The General Services Fee (GSF) at Holmesglen is a mandatory annual fee applicable to all students enrolled in Certificate I through Advanced Diploma courses. Additional Course Cost

Students will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when undertaking practical activities. The personal protective equipment and course materials students will be required to supply are: <br>Safety boots (steel capped, ankle height) <br>Work pants and shirt <br>Safety glasses <br>Safety gloves (when handling building materials) <br>Dust respirator to P2/P3 standard <br>Fold-out ruler Notebook, HB Pencil, blue or black pen, eraser <br>BYO Device-Laptop $400 <br>The total cost of these items is between $650 - $750 <br>If additional safety equipment is required, it will be supplied by the Institute.
