Course Overview

The CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry develops the practical skills and knowledge needed to work as a qualified carpenter in the building and construction industry. Completed as an apprenticeship, the course combines on-the-job experience with practical training at Holmesglen, allowing you to develop and apply your carpentry skills in both workplace and supervised training environments.<p><p>You'll build skills in reading and interpreting plans, using carpentry tools and equipment, constructing wall and roof frames, installing flooring, windows and doors, and completing internal and external construction work. Training progresses from foundational construction and carpentry skills to more complex projects, helping you develop the technical skills required for residential and commercial carpentry work.</p>

Studying the Certificate III in Carpentry at Holmesglen

At Holmesglen, you'll develop your carpentry skills through hands-on training in practical workshop environments, complementing the experience you gain in your apprenticeship workplace. You'll work on carpentry tasks and projects that allow you to practise construction techniques, use industry tools and equipment, and apply workplace knowledge in a supervised training environment.<p>You'll be supported by experienced Holmesglen carpentry teachers throughout your apprenticeship, with opportunities to ask questions, receive feedback and access individual learning support during your training blocks.<p>Between on-campus blocks, you can use Brightspace to access learning resources, theory content, assessment information and supporting materials. Your Holmesglen training and workplace experience work together to help you progressively develop the practical skills and knowledge required for the carpentry trade.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible for the program, applicants must be at least 16 years old<p>As this is an apprenticeship delivery, all students must have an employer and a valid Apprenticeship Contract in place prior to commencement.
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. The CPC30220 Certificate III in Carpentry is delivered through seven on-campus training blocks each year, with each block running for four days.<p>Training blocks may be scheduled across either side of a weekend, with classes held on Thursday, Friday, Monday and Tuesday.<p>Classes run from 8.15am to 3.45pm, with additional time available for students who require learning support.

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

Apprenticeship

Additional Course Cost

Students will be required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) when undertaking practical activities and attending site visits. The personal protective equipment and course materials students will be required to supply are: <br>Safety boots Safety pants <br>Work shirt (no singlets) Safety glasses <br>Safety gloves (when handling building materials) Claw hammer 24oz or 20oz (similar to Estwing) 1m folding ruler <br>Retractable Steel Tape (Metric 8m) Nail bag (dual pouch) <br>Chisel high impact Thru Tang - set of 3 (2mm, 19mm, 25mm) or set of 5 (6mm, 12mm, 19mm, 25mm, 32mm) 8m tape (mm) Combination square Bevel <br>Carpenter pencil x 3 <br>Hand saw (Irwin Jack 770 or Bahco Prize Cut) Set of three nail punches <br>Hat and sunscreen for sun protection Notebook, HB Pencil, blue or black pen, eraser <br>The total cost of these items is between $400 - $500 <br>If additional safety equipment is required, it will be supplied by the Institute.
