Rocco Molluso and Carolina Osejo are two of our award winners. They are studying the 22477VIC Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural).
Our students won across five categories at the 25th annual awards ceremony, which celebrate the next generation of building designers.
The honours continue Holmesglen’s excellence at the event, with our students receiving accolades over the past three years. Our students have been also recognised in this year’s interior design category.
Both Rocco and Carolina have used time in the classroom to develop residential and commercial building design knowledge and explore their creativity.
“I put many hours of hard work into my design, and it was incredibly rewarding to have my teacher acknowledge my hard work and encourage me to enter the awards,” says Rocco.
Building designers work in small and large design, architectural or construction businesses. They undertake sustainable building design, drafting and documentation of residential, industrial and commercial buildings.
At Holmesglen, building design students study four main areas – design, construction technology, working drawings and documentation, and computer technologies.
Rocco drew on skills he learnt studying the building design course for his award-winning entry.
“The brief was for student accommodation at Holmesglen’s Chadstone campus. I started to visit similar projects around Melbourne, compiled information about construction methods, materials, passive solar elements and so on,” says Rocco.
For the design phase, Rocco considered the environmental quality and the interaction and activity of residents; key concepts that building designers must understand.
“I spent many hours researching, creating, and testing new ideas that could work within the space we were given. My goal was to find new ways to create a design that was sustainable and would positively impact the construction process.”
To find a job and work as a building designer, you must have good digital skills. Holmesglen’s classrooms are fully equipped and training is delivered by professionals with extensive industry experience.
The 22477VIC Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) covers building information modelling (BIM).
Rocco’s classmate, Carolina, used BIM to create her award-winning ‘Best Digital Presentation’.
“I started to work on the modelling and documentation process, technical analysis of the elements, and the environmental impact, planning policy framework and financial prospective,” says Carolina.
“At the same time, I was working on digital visualisation, using ArchiCAD as a building information modelling software platform.” She says while it’s important to stay up to date with different software, good building designers also need to know current construction systems, materials, technical elements and environmental concepts.
Rocco and Carolina say a building designer should have:
“Read, visit buildings, take photos, and sketch ideas. In my opinion, these are very worthy qualities for a building designer,” says Carolina.
The 2477VIC Advanced Diploma of Building Design (Architectural) is offered full time or part time at our Chadstone campus and is suitable if you want to become a building designer, or work in similar roles including an architectural technician, assistant or draftsperson.
The qualification, combined with subsequent industry experience, allows graduates to become a Registered Building Practitioner with the Victorian Building Authority (VBA).
