Studying the Certificate IV in Information Technology (Programming) at Holmesglen

At Holmesglen, students will learn a variety of essential skills in software development, including:<p>• Programming Proficiency: Gain expertise in popular programming languages, such as C#, JavaScript, and Python, focusing on object-oriented programming concepts.<br>• Database Fundamentals: Understand how to design, develop, and implement databases, using tools like MySQL and Microsoft SQL Server to effectively manage and manipulate data.<br>• Website Design and Development: Explore the creation of interactive websites using HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, mastering techniques for effective design and user experience.<br>• Search Engine Optimisation (SEO): Learn strategies to optimise websites for search engines, improving visibility and ranking.<br>• Web Hosting: Acquire knowledge about selecting and setting up a web host to ensure website accessibility and performance.<p>Holmesglen emphasises practical learning through hands-on labs and workshops, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world scenarios. Additionally, robust support is provided throughout the learning journey, ensuring students have the resources they need to succeed.

Entry Requirements

All applicants must be at least 18 years of age and possess basic digital literacy skills, including the ability to power on a computer, connect to the internet, use a mouse, keyboard, headset, and webcam, as well as manage software applications, conduct web searches, and handle emails and file management. Competency in downloading and installing software and using webinar tools for remote learning is also expected. These skills will be assessed during the pre-training review and verified through BKSB results.<p>For BYOD or remote learning, a Mac with an M1 processor, 8GB of memory, and 512GB of storage, or a PC with a quad-core CPU, 16GB of RAM, 256GB of storage, and Windows 10 or higher is required. Learners must also have a headset with a microphone, a webcam, and reliable internet access.<p>Essential applications include Brightspace, Microsoft 365, WebEx, Google Chrome, and access to development tools like Visual Studio Code, GitHub Desktop, MySQL Workbench, and SQL Server. These resources are accessible through Holmesglen’s MyHorizon platform or download links provided on their site.
Prior to enrolment all applicants are required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and attend a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training.
