A joint initiative between Holmesglen and the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors’ Association (AMCA), the Centre was awarded the CIBSE Building Performance Awards 2020 - Learning and Development honour at an event in London.
The awards, open to any organisation internationally, recognise the people, products and projects that demonstrate engineering excellence in the built environment.
Holmesglen's Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning Centre of Excellence – which also received support through the Victorian Government Workforce Innovation Training Fund – is the first of its kind to offer applied learning.
The Centre simulates and replicates systems found in today’s buildings and teaches students about energy efficiency and sustainability. The facilities include a Building Information Modelling (BIM) laboratory and an augmented reality environment.
“Through exposure to a simulated ‘live’ system, the Centre builds students’ skills quickly in what would take years in the workplace, said AMCA Executive Direct Sumit Oberoi.
“Integrating the latest technologies such as energy efficiency systems and BIM software, the centre is a site that is designed and built by industry and is reflective of contemporary industry practices.”
The CIBSE Building Performance Awards judging panel dubbed the Holmesglen HVAC Centre of Excellence "an outstanding dedication to training and upskilling”. “The industry skills shortage is shouting out for initiatives like this”.
