Mechanical plumber and Holmesglen graduate Kyle Svikulis is already setting the benchmark for success in the construction industry following a rewarding plumbing apprenticeship experience.

After winning the prestigious 'National Trainee/Apprentice of the Year' award at the Air Conditioning and Mechanical Contractors Association (AMCA) Australia Industry Excellence Awards in 2023, Kyle went on to full-time work as a mechanical plumber on the Metro Tunnel project.

His plumbing apprenticeship journey is one of motivation, ambition and the impact of high-quality training.

Plumbing apprenticeships: A strong foundation at Holmesglen

Kyle’s passion for the construction industry began with his family. Inspired by his father’s 40-year career in the sector, he knew early on that plumbing would offer the career stability and professional growth he was looking for in his professional life.

“I wanted to do mechanical plumbing because of its diversity and the opportunity to work on projects that directly impact people’s lives,” Kyle said.

“Holmesglen provided the perfect [apprenticeship] training ground, combining hands-on experience with theoretical knowledge that prepared me for the demands of my industry.”

Throughout his plumbing apprenticeship, Kyle embraced every opportunity to gain additional skills, undertaking all six streams of plumbing – an achievement that set him apart from many of his peers. He credits the support of his trainers at Holmesglen for helping him develop the critical thinking and problem-solving abilities that now define his work.

Excelling in the plumbing industry

Now a plumber at D&E Air Conditioning, Kyle was chosen by his employer to work on the Melbourne Metro Tunnel project – proof of his expertise and dedication.

Responsible for ensuring high quality standards and workplace safety, Kyle plays a crucial role in delivering energy-efficient heating and cooling solutions on the project.

“Learning practical plumbing skills at Holmesglen’s AMCA Centre of Excellence, which replicates an industry-standard workplace, meant I could directly apply what I learned,” Kyle said. “That set me up to do well at work.”

Aside from his technical expertise, Kyle’s proactive approach has made him a valuable team member. On his own initiative, he has gained multiple high-risk work licences, including forklift operation, rigging and non-swing crane operation. This means he brings a high degree of versatility to his workplace, allowing him to take on the tasks that others may not have the required qualifications.

Apprenticeship recognition

In addition to his national award from AMCA, Kyle was named Apprentice of the Year at the Holmesglen Gala Awards 2024.

“These awards are a validation of the effort I’ve put in and the quality of the training I received,” he said. “Holmesglen gave me the foundation to succeed.”

Inspiring future plumbing apprentices

Kyle is a great example of how Holmesglen’s industry-focused plumbing apprenticeship training equips graduates with the skills they need to excel. As he continues to advance in his career, his story is an inspiration for future apprentices.

“For anyone considering TAFE, I’d say go for it,” Kyle said. “You gain practical skills, industry connections and a head start in your career – all without the burden of university debt. My time at Holmesglen set me on the right path and I couldn’t be more grateful.”
