Holmesglen and Epworth HealthCare: Partners in nursing

For more than 17 years, Holmesglen and Epworth HealthCare have worked together to create opportunities for nursing students to learn, grow and succeed in their careers.

How this partnership benefits nursing students

The partnership provides in-depth learning through placements and real career opportunities for Holmesglen’s Diploma of Nursing and Bachelor of Nursing course students.

Epworth HealthCare, the largest not-for-profit private hospital group in Victoria, works closely with us to offer students real-world training.

At the heart of this partnership is the NECHE Fellowship Program (Nursing Education Collaboration Holmesglen and Epworth). Each year, 30 Diploma of Nursing course students complete all 400 hours of their clinical placement at Epworth and Bachelor of Nursing students enjoy similar opportunities.

Epworth hosts up to 200 Holmesglen students annually for placements across a range of professional clinical environments. Many of these students are offered jobs with Epworth after they graduate.

Hands-on learning that prepares students for nursing careers

The NECHE program is all about helping students become confident and capable nurses. It offers hands-on experience in a variety of clinical settings, from general wards to specialty areas like surgery. This assists students to build skills and feel like they belong in the healthcare team. Importantly, it helps them to easily adjust to the demands of nursing work.

Epworth provides Holmesglen with ongoing feedback through a dedicated Course Advisory Committee to make sure that training is current and meeting employer requirements.

NECHE also tackles an important issue: helping Enrolled Nurses and Registered Nurses to understand each other’s roles. Students take part in joint simulations, learning how to work together effectively before moving into the workplace. This approach improves teamwork and ensures better care for patients.

Support along the way – from nursing placements to careers

Epworth is committed to supporting students through every stage of their placements. From a welcoming orientation to hands-on supervision, students are treated as valued team members. Extra help is available for those who need it, ensuring that everyone has the chance to succeed.

For graduates, the partnership opens doors to exciting career opportunities at Epworth’s many hospitals. Diploma graduates can also continue their studies with Holmesglen’s Bachelor of Nursing, again supported by Epworth placements.

Building nursing skills for the future

Students benefit from our innovative facilities, including the Simulation Centre at our Moorabbin campus. This world-class learning space features robotic patients and live actors, helping students practise their skills in realistic scenarios. Nursing students train alongside their peers in other health fields, such as pathology and mental health course students, preparing them for the team-based care that’s essential in today’s healthcare environment.

A model for success

The Holmesglen-Epworth partnership is a fantastic example of how education and industry can work together to create genuine opportunities. With access to high-quality placements, experienced mentors and career pathways, our students graduate ready to make a real difference in healthcare.
