From the coastal town of Inverloch, Aiden Box arrived at Holmesglen with a passion and determination to discover his dream sports job.

Today he’s happily juggling jobs across multiple sports media outlets, using the skills and knowledge that he gained during his sport degree in Melbourne

Sports jobs: Making the most of every opportunity

Over the three years of his Bachelor of Sports Media degree, Aiden used every opportunity to learn and grow – to get closer to a sports job in industry.

His dedication led him to secure three internships, including a coveted offer from Fox Footy, which he ultimately declined due to an already-packed schedule. He achieved a personal milestone when he found himself behind the microphone at SEN, calling the action as his hometown team claimed its fifth premiership – a moment he’d dreamed of realising.

Gaining valuable sport experience and connections

Aiden is now a social and digital media producer at ESPN Australia. He’s involved in TV production at Rainmaker, SEN’s television arm. And he manages social media for the West Gippsland Football Netball League, along with commentating on their local football matches. Aiden attributes his success to the calibre of teaching he experienced at Holmesglen.

“My teachers were sports media professionals who all had strong contacts in the industry. Through them I met lots of people and they connected me with my internship opportunities,” he said. “I don’t think you’d get that level of industry interaction anywhere else.

“I also really appreciated the fact that our teachers built each of us up and gave us the confidence to get out there and succeed.”

A leader and mentor

During his time at Holmesglen, Aiden’s commitment to learning was matched by his ability to motivate those around him. A natural leader, he inspired his classmates through thoughtful discussion and an eagerness to engage with new ideas. He was also a mentor to incoming students, sharing insights into the sports media degree and the industry’s demands. His passion for Holmesglen and its programs was evident in his ongoing involvement, which included volunteering at Open Days, speaking at events and guiding prospective students.

For Aiden, Holmesglen wasn’t just an education – it was a place where he found his calling.

"In high school I never quite fitted in. I loved sport, but I wasn’t the most talented player,” he said. “Then I enrolled in the Bachelor of Sports Media at Holmesglen and everything clicked. This wasn’t just something I loved; it was where I belonged.”

A bright future in the sport industry

Aiden’s story is one of persistence and dedication. He left Holmesglen as winner of the Peter Darvall Higher Education Student of the Year Award, an accomplished graduate who is now making his mark in the world of sports media.

“Studying at Holmesglen was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. The opportunities I’ve had, the connections I’ve built and the person I’ve become – I wouldn’t trade it for anything.

“Sports media is an amazing field sector. I love what I do. It never feels like work!”
