Accelerating Action: Championing women in tech

A group, composed of eight IT students and teachers, stand together in Holmesglen's Cyber Security Operations Centre.

Could hiring more women into the tech industry not only enhance diversity but also boost industry value by billions?

A traditionally male-dominated IT industry is now welcoming more women in tech roles, and identifying their unique skills, fresh perspectives and ability to innovate.

Why we need more women in tech

A recent ACS report suggests that Australia’s tech industry is increasingly acknowledging the need for a more diverse workforce.

With AI projected to contribute $115 billion annually to the Australian economy by 2030, industry experts believe that boosting diversity could add over $21 billion in economic value over the next 20 years.

To unlock this potential, employers are encouraged to remove biases from hiring processes and adopt flexible pathways to attract and retain diverse talent.

Similarly, training the future workforce of women to ensure they are well equipped to enrich the industry becomes a critical need, an ask that Holmesglen is ready to deliver on.

Attracting more women to IT courses

IT courses at Holmesglen are future-focused and actively encourage more female students to explore pathways in growth areas such as cyber security, analytics and network support.

Inclusive learning environments ensure that all students, regardless of gender, feel empowered to develop their skills.

In her role, Mina regularly engages with female students, supporting them on their journey from classroom, all the way through to employment.

“I actively encourage open communication and provide a supportive environment where female students and colleagues feel valued and heard. By sharing experiences, offering guidance, and connecting them with role models in the industry, I aim to inspire and empower them to pursue their goals in tech.”

Studying an IT course at Holmesglen

For Christina Dodds, a Holmesglen IT course provided a pathway to achieving her dream of working in tech. She completed her Advanced Diploma of Cyber Security course and found that the encouragement she received from her teachers and classmates created a support system that assured her she was on the right path.

“It didn’t matter if there were more males or females in the class, we were all working towards the same goals and with the support we received, it was not hard to stay focused.”

At the end of her IT course, Christina was hired into Holmesglen’s Technology Services department where she continues to pursue her passion for tech.

Helen Torchia, Technical Business Analyst at Datacom, was already working in the IT industry and studied cyber security at Holmesglen to uplift her skills in an emerging area.

“There were so many women in my class, we supported each other and formed friendships that went beyond the course. When I started my role in cyber security, everything that I learned came into play and I was grateful for the course content that was spot on and prepared me so well for my day-to-day work.”

Inspiring the next generation of women in tech

Holmesglen’s commitment towards encouraging higher female participation in IT courses and careers also includes initiatives to provide mentorship, scholarships, and training programs while promoting success stories of female alumni and staff members as role models.

By highlighting the potential of high paying IT jobs, growing career opportunities and strategic pathways, we aim to inspire the next generation of women to thrive in their tech careers.
