Responding to the disclosure of child abuse

Disclosure of child abuse or safety concerns of a child can be confronting. It’s important to understand how to respond to a child if they disclose such information. There are four key things to remember:

Listen - Move to a suitable environment, away from possible distractions. Remain calm and patient and allow for the child or young person to be heard allowing them to use their own words. Don’t be afraid of saying the “wrong” thing. Listening supportively is more important than what you say.

Reassure - Advise the child or young person that it is OK that they have disclosed what’s been happening. Address any concerns about the child or young person’s safety and reassure the child or young person that he or she is not at fault, and not the cause of any distress you may feel.

Respect - Understand that the child or young person may only reveal some details and acknowledge their bravery and strength. Avoid making promises you can’t keep and explain to the child or young person that for them to be safe you will need to report their experience to someone.

Report - You must report any concerns of child abuse or suspicions of child abuse to your teacher, course coordinator, head of department, or contact the following persons immediately.
