Online workshops

The Learning Skills Centre offers a range of information and computer skill workshops. These are online sessions and free to Holmesglen students.

Welcome to Term 2, 2024!

What you’ll Learn:

  • Use Microsoft Word for developing assessments. 
  • Most common used functions and shortcuts in Microsoft Excel
  • Create and enhance Microsoft PowerPoint presentations with animations, transitions, and dynamic backgrounds.
  • Most common used functions and shortcuts in Microsoft PowerPoint
  • Microsoft Outlook operations (recall, auto-reply, send/ receive emails with attachments)
  • Improve your computer safety awareness.

Online Mini Workshop – April 2024

1. Microsoft Word: Useful tools to develop your assessments Part 2

Do you proofread your assessments before submitting? This 30-minute workshop will show you how to do a grammar check and use accessibility functions such as read aloud and dictation. You will also learn about other functions such as when to use Save and Save as, how to save a document as a PDF and navigate Print options and shortcuts.

2. Microsoft Excel Part 1: Create a simple spreadsheet

New to using Microsoft Excel? Come along to this 30-minute workshop and learn how to create a spreadsheet using Excel tabs and ribbons. You will also understand basic functions such as worksheets, cells, active cells, and range.

3. Microsoft Excel Part 2: Format spreadsheets

Would you like to make your Excel tables look professional? This 30-minute workshop will teach you the basic Microsoft Excel groups such as Font, alignment, number, and table formatting.

Online Mini Workshop – May 2024

4.  Microsoft Excel Part 3: Calculations and shortcuts

This 30-minute workshop will teach you the basic numerical functions used in Microsoft Excel such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. You will also become familiar with some more advanced functions such as subtotal, maximum, and minimum, D-SUM and VLOOKUP. Students will also learn useful shortcuts.

5. Microsoft PowerPoint: Slide layouts for effective presentations Part 1

Do you need to use PowerPoint slides for class presentations? In part one of three workshops, you will learn about Microsoft PowerPoint tabs, ribbons and groups, the slide navigation pane, how to add headings and subheadings and insert tables, text box, pictures, headers, and footers. Develop your skills in 30 minutes, to make your slides easy to read and engaging.

6. Microsoft PowerPoint: Slide layouts for effective presentations Part 2

7. Microsoft PowerPoint: Slide layouts for effective presentations Part 3

Do you need to use PowerPoint slides for class presentations? In the final part of these Microsoft PowerPoint workshops, you will learn how to set up animations, use transitions and develop shortcuts. Develop your skills in 30 minutes, to make your slides easy to read and engaging.

Online Mini Workshop – June 2024

8. Microsoft Outlook: Settings and Navigations

Do you need to use Outlook to send and receive emails? Want to learn the basics? Come along to this 30-minute workshop and learn how to log in and access your emails, send, and receive attachments, create ‘flags’ for incoming emails and categorise received emails. You will also explore more advanced features such as how to recall, encrypt and set up an autoreply.

9. Microsoft Outlook: Calendar and appointments

Need to manage your time better? Holmesglen students have access to Outlook Calendar, so why not use it to organise your study. In this 30-minute workshop, you will learn how to put daily tasks into the calendar, create categories and schedule meetings. You will never miss any study deadlines!

10. Improve your computer safety awareness

With the huge amount of information, you search and use online every day, it is important to keep your work and identity safe. In this 30-minute workshop you will learn connectivity options such as Bluetooth devices, Wi-Fi, and personal hotspots along with online safety awareness and about your own Digital footprint.
