Your studies will take you to numerous locations within south eastern Australia, as you learn to lead groups in coastal, alpine, desert and mountain environments.

Studying the Diploma of Outdoor Leadership at Holmesglen
Your course will focus on developing the capabilities required to plan, organise and deliver outdoor adventure programs using a variety of outdoor activities for a wide range of clients. You’ll develop both camp and expedition management skills including group leadership, program coordination and risk management skills allowing you to lead and manage others safely.
The course is ideal for outdoor enthusiasts who are experienced in outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, canoeing, white water rafting and challenge high rope courses. As part of the course, students are required to complete a number of vocational simulated practical experiences in the outdoor recreation/adventure tourism industry.

Timetable
4 days per week, Monday – Thursday: 9am to 4pm
Classes are a combination of both practical and theoretical learning, on campus and virtual. The course includes off-campus field excursions, sometimes overnight.
To receive the SIS50419 Diploma of Outdoor Leadership you must complete 28 units, which comprise of 13 core units and 15 elective units. With the SIT30116 Certificate III in Tourism, you must complete 15 units, which comprise of 4 core units and 11 elective units.

Assessment
Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.
Entry requirements
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training review at an interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.
Applicants are also required to commit to off-campus field excursions (that may be overnight) throughout the year.
Holmesglen requires students to be aged 18 by February of the year they start the course. Students should also have the physical capacity to be able to work in the field where they may be required to assist with outdoor leadership equipment, while complying with all Manual Handling WHS legislation. A Working with Children's Check is required due to the practical placement component in the course.
Applicants should also have
- a desire to further progress their outdoor leadership skills and knowledge
- a Certificate III or IV in Outdoor Leadership (or equivalent experience or qualifications)
- experience and interest in the outdoors, and nature
- a mature attitude and approach to study
- an ability to be flexible and show initiative
- a desire to work with young people in a range of difficult and dynamic environments.

Recognition of prior learning
You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. Qualification and recognition
On completion, you will attain the SIS50419 Diploma of Outdoor Leadership and the SIT30116 Certificate III in Tourism, and be able to work as a skilled senior program leader or logistics and operations manager, be self-employed or work within a larger activity based company.
