Studying the Diploma of Dental Technology at Holmesglen

To maximise your employment opportunities, you will complete specialised training in the use of computer-aided design (CAD) and learn about computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) processes. You will learn to design, manufacture, modify and repair prostheses and appliances, such as dentures, mouth guards, bridges and crowns.
Dental technicians work in dental laboratories on their own or in groups, under the prescription of dentists, dental prosthetists, or dental specialists. You will be trained in our purpose-built facilities, which have been designed to simulate the workplace environment.
Our teaching staff are all qualified dental technicians or dental prosthetists. Each student has their own workstation where they are able to use highly technical equipment to create dental appliances. Safety is always of paramount importance in the laboratory.
The course also includes important skills such as communication, first aid, infection control, work, health and safety processes (WHS), and business management skills, which are particularly important if you plan to go into private practice.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, students must be at least 18 years of age.
Learners will be referred to the learning skills centre if their LLN levels are not at the required exit levels of 3, in condition that the gap is not greater than 1 level. Learners who opt to take up non-mandatory placement, must provide a third COVID Vaccination certificate.
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. Read more about Recognition of Prior Learning, Credits and Advanced Standing.

Course Structure

Timetable

The program is structured to provide a strong foundation in both theoretical concepts and hands-on practical experience, ensuring learners are well prepared for the dynamic field of dental technology. Electives are chosen to maximise employment outcomes for dental technicians responsible for construction and repair of dentures and other dental appliances.
The course lasts two years and is divided into four semesters, each with 15 weeks of training and assessments. Learners will attend classes three times each week typically from 9am - 4:30pm.
Assessments are conducted through observation and through written/oral submissions and presentations as detailed in respective unit outlines. It's important to note that though Holmesglen makes every effort to arrange a 2-week work placement for each student, this is NOT mandatory according to the HLT55118 training package. This is simply done in order to give students industry-specific work experience which can be used to both solidify training undertaken at Holmesglen as well as improve the chances of finding employment upon completion of the course. The workplace placement is organised for during the learners fourth semester in stage 4. This option is exclusively available to local learners and is not a requirement for the qualification, making it unavailable to international learners.
