Studying the Diploma of Dental Technology at Holmesglen

To maximise your employment opportunities, you will undertake specialised training in dental technology, including computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). You will learn to design, manufacture, modify, and repair dental prostheses and appliances such as dentures, mouthguards, bridges, and crowns.<p>This is a highly practical, hands-on dental technology course in Melbourne. You will train in Holmesglen’s purpose-built dental laboratories, using state-of-the-art, industry-standard equipment. Each student has their own workstation, providing the opportunity to practise dental technician skills in a real-world setting.<p>You will be supported by our experienced teaching staff, who are all qualified dental technicians or dental prosthetists. They bring industry expertise and provide guidance to help you build confidence and succeed in your studies.<p>In addition to technical training, you will gain essential professional skills, including communication, first aid, infection control, work health and safety (WHS), and business management, preparing you for work in dental laboratories, clinics, or your own private practice.<p>Career outcomes: This course is designed for students who want to become dental technicians in Australia and build rewarding careers in dental technology.

Entry Requirements

To be eligible, applicants must:<br>• Be at least 18 years of age<br>• Demonstrate Language, Literacy and Numeracy (LLN) at Level 3 in both numeracy and literacy<p><strong>LLN Skills Expected</strong><br>Eligible learners will typically be able to:<br>• Evaluate and integrate information and ideas from familiar and some unfamiliar texts<br>• Select and apply appropriate reading strategies for purpose and text type<br>• Communicate relationships between ideas and information in a style suited to the audience<br>• Use suitable vocabulary, grammar, and conventions in written communication<br>• Apply strategies to establish and maintain spoken communication in familiar and some unfamiliar contexts<br>• Understand meaning from a range of oral texts<br>• Interpret mathematical information embedded in familiar and some less familiar tasks<br>• Apply a range of mathematical and problem-solving strategies in different contexts<br>• Communicate mathematically using both informal and formal language and representations
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.<p>Learners will be referred to the learning skills centre if their LLN levels are not at the required exit levels of 3, in condition that the gap is not greater than 1 level. Learners who opt to take up non-mandatory placement, must provide a third COVID Vaccination certificate.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. The program provides a strong foundation in both theoretical concepts and hands-on practical experience, preparing learners for the dynamic field of dental technology. Electives are selected to maximise employment outcomes for dental technicians who construct and repair dentures and other dental appliances.<p><strong>Duration and Delivery</strong><br>• Course length: 2 years, divided into 4 semesters<br> - Semester 1: 15 weeks<br> - Semester 2: 15 weeks<br> - Semester 3: 16 weeks<br> - Semester 4: 15 weeks<br>• Class schedule: 3 days per week, typically 9 am – 4.30 pm<br>• Independent study: Approximately 4 hours per week<p><strong>Assessment</strong><br>Assessment methods include:<br>• Practical observation<br>• Written and oral submissions<br>• Presentations (outlined in respective unit guides)<p><strong>Work Placement</strong><br>• Holmesglen makes every effort to arrange a 2-week work placement for local students during Semester 4.<br>• Work placement is not mandatory under the HLT55118 training package but provides valuable industry-specific experience to reinforce training and improve employment opportunities.<br>• Work placement is not available to international students.
