Holmesglen offers a flexible and engaging experience for apprentices. We have a proven reputation for providing quality training that is designed to meet the needs of individuals, companies and employers.
Our Civil Construction department offers apprenticeship training in the general stream. Holmesglen's innovative proven model of delivery is based on the principles of 70/20/10 training, where 70% is on the job, 20% is coaching and peer review, and 10% is classroom based learning.
Our training and assessment caters for varying entry levels, while seeking to recognise your current skills and experience. We can customise training to suit your needs.
This is not offered as a Free TAFE course.
Course structure
To receive this qualification you must complete:

17 elective units
The electives have been selected in consultation with industry as being most relevant to working in general civil construction.
If you already hold statements of attainment for any of the units, these may be eligible for credit transfer to count towards completion of the qualification.

Assessment
Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.
Entry requirements
Employed as an apprentice in the civil construction industry or related business with a apprenticeship training contract in place and signed by Holmesglen / Apprentice / Employer.
Must hold WorkSafe Victoria construction industry induction white card. Holmesglen will provide the industry card training at an additional cost if required.
The required LLN levels for this qualification are Reading: 3, Writing: 2 and Numeracy: 4 to ensure candidates/apprentices can conduct the following tasks:
Use and interpret vocabulary specific and workplace procedures to communicate with other workplace personnel.
Complete a Safe Work Method Statement to include other work being conducted at the work place, including a site plan for underground surfaces.
Interpret documentation that includes technical specificity to workplace procedures, inspection and safe use of plant and safety equipment, including emergency plan workplace signage.
Calculate soil types, weights and cubic metres.
Apprentices must complete a BKSB Literacy and Numeracy assessment before enrolment.
There are no prerequisites for this qualification.

Recognition of prior learning
You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. How to apply
Apprenticeship
A training contract must be completed by the employer and apprentice within the first two weeks of employment.
An Australian Apprenticeship Support Network representative will visit the workplace to complete the training contract with the employer and the apprentice.
