Enthusiasm for a career in a booming industry sector rewarded Mengyu Ji with a new job as a construction estimator, after she gave up on hospitality and enrolled in Holmesglen’s CPC50210 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building).
“The construction industry is growing. I thought it was a great field with opportunity,” says Mengyu (or “Tess”).
Tess graduates soon from the Free TAFE course and hopes to one day become a project manager.
“I prepare quotations, work with the project manager and complete admin work, such as preparing tender documentation.”
According to website Seek, employment in Australia’s building and construction sector is booming and forecast to grow by almost nine per cent over five years.
Holmesglen offers a range of Free TAFE courses, including 14 in building and construction. If you are eligible for Free TAFE like Tess, the Victorian Government will pay your tuition fees.
What can you learn with a building and construction course?
The CPC50210 Diploma of Building and Construction (Building) prepares students to coordinate a range of building construction projects, including residential and medium-rise developments.
Students learn how to apply building codes, OHS risk management and structural principles, and prepare construction contracts, among other key building and construction skills.
Tess says understanding construction theory and its legislation and regulations has helped significantly with her current role and made it easy to transition from study to work.
“The knowledge I learned at Holmesglen has also helped with calculating material and labour costs.”
Tess’s advice for building and construction students
“I hope students can build their industry relationships when they start their course.
“They should also build good relationships with their classmates, as you never know who may be able to help you with your career.
“All the information I've learned has helped when I've gone into work.”
