How to succeed in hospitality management

Carol San stepped out of her comfort zone and embraced a new culture when she arrived at Holmesglen. A Vietnamese native, she used her Bachelor of Hospitality Management to grow her knowledge but, just as importantly, create new opportunities.

In a sign of her dedication, Carol was presented with the Outstanding International Student honour at the 2018 Holmesglen Gala Awards Dinner.

So, how does Carol recommend you gain work experience and grown your career potential in the hospitality industry?

Make the most of your studies

While learning, Carol gained the skills that would help her explore managerial roles within the hospitality industry. However, her Holmesglen experience extended beyond the classroom, helping her to build important professional experience.

Carol represented Holmesglen at the 2017 Council of International Students Australia National Conference in Canberra. She was also selected to represent the Institute at the 2017 TEQSA Conference.

Don’t wait, gain work experience

“Doing an internship is a good opportunity to enrich your skills and experience in the industry. Being an intern, you are free to observe, ask questions, make mistakes and build relationships. You have the chance to reflect on what you have learnt in class and to assess your own performance,” Carol says.

Through her degree, Carol received work at The Westin Melbourne where she got to apply everything she had learned in a work environment.

Use this experience as a stepping stone

“A positive reference from your industry employer will brighten up your resume and the possibility of you being employed by your internship place will also be higher,” Carol adds.

In a sign of her dedication, she was rewarded with an extended four-month internship at The Westin Melbourne.

Use your work opportunities to also build your confidence

I started to communicate more in class, be more engaged with the Holmesglen International Centre, and actively sought help from my lecturers to improve my academic performance. I got back the balance in life,” Carol says of the study benefits after gaining work experience.

Set future goals

Carol sees a clear connection between her degree and her goals. While she’s devoted to the present, she also has a focus on the future. One day, she would like to own her own café in either Melbourne or Ho Chi Minh City.
