CELTA Testimonial: Wendy

Gaining new skills is a matter of dedication and repetition. For CELTA (Cambridge Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) graduate Wendy Cheung, the training provided at Holmesglen translated strongly to the workforce.

After completing her CELTA course, Wendy went on to work successfully in Hong Kong.

“I was first placed in a kindergarten to teach a Cambridge course, then to a primary school to teach a speaking course and then a secondary school to teach another curriculum altogether. With each job, I had a lesson plan and at least two hours to go over the materials.”

“I realised with relief that the lesson plan layout was very familiar and conceptually it was almost identical to that of the CELTA lesson plans we were taught to do. This really helped me mentally.”

Wendy now possesses the important skillsets to succeed. “Now, I am playing a huge part in the recruitment of teachers, training them for our courses and helping them with their curriculum planning at the schools they're assigned to,” she explains.

CELTA is taught with a focus on providing pre-service training in teaching English to people where English is not their primary language. Like Holmesglen’s wider focus, it also aims to provide practical experience.

“Maybe this is purely my observation, but my CELTA teachers are truly more confident in their classes and lesson planning than most other teachers with different certifications,” Wendy observes. “For this reason, I now lean towards hiring candidates that have already done the CELTA rather than any other ESL Certification, as I know that they are mentally ready and capable to plan a lesson and curriculum.”
