GRADUATION AND AWARDS

Vocational Student of the Year - Certificate

Celebrating the achievements of our valued students and staff.

Winner – Kurin Lelean

Certificate IV in Youth Work

Kurin is a passionate advocate for young people and social justice, with a particular interest in supporting intersectional communities.

His determination to become a youth worker stems from his own experiences with services that did not meet many of his needs as a queer, transgender Murrinh-Patha man, and he is committed to creating inclusive spaces for young people who may also feel disenfranchised.

Kurin’s studies at Holmesglen helped him develop a range of skills including interpersonal communication and trauma-informed care.

He secured employment with Aruma, an organisation supporting people with disability to live the lives they choose. Kurin is also a strong advocate for vocational education, particularly TAFE as an inclusive pathway, and he contributed to positive change within the Holmesglen community as the Chair of the Student Representative Council.

Finalist - Mahinda Abeysekara

Certificate II in Building and Construction (Carpentry)

Mahinda, a highly accomplished mechanical engineer with over 35 years of experience in the oil and gas industry, always dreamed of becoming a carpenter.

After his children completed their education and left home, Mahinda decided to pursue his passion for carpentry.

Mahinda's aim is to build houses that can last a lifetime and he brings decades of experience in engineering and construction to his carpentry work.

Featured last year in a Channel 7 News story, Mahinda shared his story, love of carpentry and demonstrated how something beautiful can be crafted with your own hands.

“Mahinda is a true inspiration and a reminder that you should never give up on your dreams. It’s never too late to change careers and follow your passion,” says Dean, Liz Jansz.
