CPC31411 Certificate III in Construction Waterproofing

A desire for a career change was the catalyst for Dianne De Vante to re-visit her passion for trades and take up waterproofing.

Dianne now works at Rowville’s Sealrite Waterproofing and is mentoring a young apprentice.

She earned the praise of her Holmesglen teachers for her willingness to pass on her knowledge and skills to the other students in the class and assist them in any way she could.

A single mum, Dianne is also actively involved with Tradie Lady Club, a cause close to her heart, which her sister-in-law established to help raise awareness for women in trades.

She hopes to own a waterproofing business in the future.

MSF40213 Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology

As a disability carer of 20 years, Michael Wright became interested in the various ways furniture could aid people. This interest soon expanded into home furniture and new career path.

Michael hopes to start his own business to promote locally manufactured furniture, following a recent battle with cancer.

Michael has “turned it into something positive by committing to a different future in his working life,” says teacher Christopher Beck.

Michael's fresh and innovative approach to furniture design earned him recognition at Melbourne Fringe Furniture Awards in 2020.

He also volunteers in design-related industries, to deepen his knowledge and experience, while he works alongside his partner who is an artist and designer.

Patrick Connell - 2021 winner

MSF40213 Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology

Patrick Connell’s furniture design journey was inspired by his grandfather’s skills in manual working.

Drawing on his family’s background, Patrick has become one of the industry’s top emerging furniture designers, presented with the Finely Crafted Award (Emerging) at the 2020 Fringe Furniture Awards.

Patrick says he enjoys bringing an idea to life, having expanded his skills in metal and woodwork.

“I have a real interest in arts and crafts furniture; due to its focus on functionality, strength and respect for craftmanship.”

A career firefighter, Patrick's move into furniture design has been a leap of faith, where he's successfully balanced family life with the rigours of full-time study.

Patrick says he hopes to collaborate with other passionate furniture makers in the future.
