Exercise the practical side of your brain in this hands-on basic woodwork course. Topics include; using and maintaining hand tools, demonstration of the safe use of portable power tools, basic wood working skills, timber joints, planning and much more. At the end of the course each student will have built a toolbox/tray. Then sharpen your woodwork knowledge and take your skills to the next level. The set project for this course incorporates joint and drawer construction and instruction is given on the safe use of portable power tools, including jigsaw and router


Requirements

    • Appropriate work clothes (ie. long pants or overalls and long sleeved top)
    • Work boots
    • Protective safety glasses
    • Dust mask
    • Ear plugs
    • Pen and notebook
    • Safety glasses, hearing protection and dust mask are to comply with relevant Australian Standards
    • Tape measure
    • 30cm steel ruler
    • HB pencils
    • There are no prerequisites for this course

Outcomes

    • Gain skills to efficiently, correctly and safely use a variety of hand tools
    • Learn to mark out properly, using set square, rulers, tape measure and a pencil
    • Gain a basic knowledge of the different types of timber that are readily available
    • Learn correct usage of manual and power tools with safe working practices
    • Project planning including skills in material choice and quantities
    • Drawing up and working off drawings and netting lists
    • Incorporates various joint and construction techniques
    • Students finish their project to a polishable state
