This course provides you with the necessary skills and knowledge that, when combined with workplace skills enhancement, will enable you to perform the work of a turf tradesperson.

This course is run in accordance with the National Industry Competency Standards for turf.

You will learn skills in the establishment and maintenance of recreational turf, the preparation of sports playing surfaces and the management of recreational and sports turf facilities.

You will also learn how to provide advice on turf irrigation, pest and disease control, and management practices.

Course structure

To receive this qualification you must complete 11 core units and five elective units.

Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications.

If you have already completed other eligible elective units, these may be counted towards completion of this program.


Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards

Entry requirements

Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

Apprenticeship: training agreement with a registered employer from a relevant industry.


You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. Upon successfully completing this program, you will be eligible to receive the nationally endorsed AHC31316 Certificate III in Sports Turf Management.


Graduates can undertake further study in the Diploma in Sports Turf Managment.

A training contract must be completed by the employer and apprentice within the first two weeks of employment.

A representative from the Australian Apprenticeship Support Network will visit the workplace to complete the training contract with the employer and the apprentice.

Horticulture Open Days

Visit us on Open Day for an overview of the Horticulture industry, starting at 4.30pm. You'll get to tour the horticulture department's facilities (at the Waverley campus), talk to teachers and get the information you need to study a course in horticulture, arboriculture, landscape construction and design, parks and gardens, nursery, turf or sustainability. We'll even help you apply on the night!
