The Certificate of English Language Teaching to Speakers of Other Languages (CELTA) is an internationally recognised pre-service qualification that prepares you to teach English in Australia or overseas. The certificate is a University of Cambridge qualification delivered by Holmesglen.
Studying the CELTA at Holmesglen
Your skills and knowledge will be developed through a combination of classroom learning, practical placement, access to online resources, reading and self study.
The Holmesglen CELTA includes a free online grammar review course to complete before you start and includes substantial career counselling and job search assistance as part of the course, in addition to the standard Holmesglen services and facilities.
The course provides thorough and practical training if you are seeking employment as a teacher of English to speakers of other languages in Australia and overseas. While similar to the Certificate IV in TESOL, the CELTA has a higher language proficiency entry requirement, and is very well known internationally. It is a popular choice for those looking to teach abroad as well as at home.
If you wish to work in a voluntary capacity in community-based organisations in Australia or overseas, you will also benefit from this course.

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards
Applicants must be at least 18 have an awareness of language and a competence in both written and spoken English that will enable them to undertake the course and prepare for teaching a range of levels.
Applicants must have the potential to develop the necessary skills to become effective teachers and to successfully complete written assignments and the assessment of practice teaching*
Please note - to be employed in Australia as an English as a Second Language teacher, you must have gained an undergraduate degree, as a minimum.
Prior to enrolment or commencement of training you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and a pre-training interview.
These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.
Qualification and recognition
CELTA is an internationally recognised qualification, enabling graduates to teach English to speakers of other languages around the world. It is externally validated and overseen by the University of Cambridge.
To achieve this qualification, you are required to successfully complete all units and the teaching practicum- which is organised by Holmesglen.
