The Holmesglen Vocational College offers a six month VCAL Foundation program to young people who recognise their learning style is suited to vocational education and hands-on teaching.

This VCAL Foundation program is aimed at students who are half way through Year 10 and want to make the transition to an adult learning environment to complete their Senior Secondary certificate in VCAL.

Our Vocational College VCAL Foundation program has clear pathways into VCAL Intermediate, VCAL Senior (equivalent Year 12) and further TAFE courses and apprenticeships.

Students get the opportunity to gain a sense of belonging within a new, supportive and rewarding environment.

Strong literacy, numeracy and employability skills components are the focus, where you will experience personal development and growth, and engage in a variety of projects and activities within the Holmesglen setting and the surrounding community.

You will also arrange an 'end of semester event', which will involve working in a variety of industries, gaining hands on experience in a professional setting.

The VCAL Foundation program encourages diversity and ensures everyone has equal rights and a tailored learning approach to suit the individual.

Are you 16-19 years old? Do you need support with your learning and/or social skills? Did you get help from a teacher's aide in class?

The Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) Foundation course will help you develop skills related to work, literacy, numeracy as well as personal development and industry specific skills.

You will take part in practical studies and complete projects based on real-world situations. Your classes will be adapted to suit your interests, abilities and strengths.

The VCAL Foundation curriculum promotes the principles and practice of Australian democracy, including a commitment to elected government; the rule of law; equal rights for all before the law; freedom of religion; freedom of speech and association; and the values of openness and tolerance.

You will study in groups of 10 or 11.

The course includes four weeks of structured workplace learning and a two-night camp.

Holmesglen Vocational College offers a 12 month VCAL Intermediate course to young people who recognise that their career path is better suited to a vocational education setting, with a hands-on learning and teaching style, rather than a school setting.

This course is aimed at students who have completed year 10 (or equivalent) and want to make the transition to an adult learning environment to complete their Senior Secondary Certificate in VCAL.

This course explores a variety of projects and engages with the community, excursions and camps, with clear pathways into VCAL Senior (equivalent Year 12) and further TAFE courses and apprenticeships.

You will get the opportunity to gain a sense of belonging within a new, supportive and rewarding environment.

Strong literacy, numeracy, employability skills and structured work placement learning (placements) are the focus, where you will experience personal development and growth, and thrive in an excellent alternative to VCE.

A strong emphasis is placed on the student journey and experience and finishing the course with industry experience that you can immediately apply to the workplace. Part of this experience involves having access to the specialist facilities at Holmesglen, completing Industry Specific Streams two days per week, each semester. There is a large variety of industry choices that the Learner will get to choose from, as part of their VCAL program. They will choose one stream in each semester. These include:

Industry Streams Semester 1

Carpentry and Bricklaying
Commercial Art
Community Services
Electrical and Engineering
Event Management
Horticulture and Landscaping
Hospitality
Multimedia
Plumbing Mechanical Practices

Industry Streams Semester 2

Allied Health
Beauty and Fashion
Business and Tourism
Carpentry and Bricklaying
Electrical and Engineering
Hospitality with Retail
Painting, Joinery and Drones
Plumbing Mechanical Practices
Sport and Recreation

The VCAL Intermediate program encourages diversity and ensures everyone has equal rights and a tailored learning approach to suit the individual.

Holmesglen Vocational College offers VCAL Senior to young people who recognise that their career path is suited to vocational education and a hands on teaching and learning style, in an adult learning environment.

Moorabbin and Waverley Campus delivers the VCAL Senior program differently, to cater for a wider group of people. Please read below for the overview of each program. Both are delivered in a positive and supportive environment, focused on learning the way you want to be taught and how industry expects you to learn, creating opportunities for every individual:

Moorabbin campus: In this course you will focus on your core studies for six months, then have the flexibility to pathway into your chosen industry course for the following six months. You will complete your core VCAL units over four days per week during your first six months. One day per week is also set aside for you to organise part time or casual work. Then, allocated days will be negotiated for your chosen industry stream in the following six months (these depend on the course you select – you will spend time discussing these pathway options with our careers expert, identifying a course that you wish to pursue, varying from certificate II, III, IV and diplomas level courses). If you have completed previous industry units (e.g. from VCAL Intermediate or your previous school), you may be eligible to complete your VCAL Senior within six months, instead of one year.

Waverley Campus: In this course, you can choose to study a combination of core units alongside specialist industry streams. You will complete the main VCAL units over two days each week. During another two days of the week, you will have access to specialist facilities at Holmesglen for industry specific streams. Each stream offers approximately 200 hours of competency training at Certificate II or Certificate III level, and you will complete two industry streams throughout the year (one per semester). It may also be possible to study a different course of interest whilst completing the 2 days of VCAL core. Studying VCAL Senior this way will give you your Year 12 qualification and accredited training in your chosen career path at the same time. Plus, one day per week is set aside for you to organise part time or casual work. A list of these industry streams that you could choose from, include:

Industry Streams Semester 1

Carpentry and Bricklaying
Commercial Art
Community Services

Plumbing Mechanical Practices

Industry Streams Semester 2

Allied Health
Beauty and Fashion
Business and Tourism

You will be one step closer to attaining your career goals at the completion of VCAL Senior.
