This course focuses on further developing your skills in the design of furniture and the application of the design into a finished furniture product.
Furniture designers are experts in creating and designing furnishings, while considering both fashion and functionality.
They design interior and exterior furniture, often keeping factors like sustainability, ergonomics, customer style preferences and practicality in mind.
This course is designed to meet the expectations of the Australian furniture industry, preparing you with the skills to be job ready from day one.
You will design and test your own prototypes in dedicated computer labs and theory rooms before manufacturing them.

To receive this qualification you must complete five core units and 18 elective units.
Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications.
If you have already completed other eligible elective units, these may be counted towards completion of this program.

Operate Computer-aided Design (CAD) System To Produce Basic Drawing Elements
Use Computer-aided Design (CAD) To Create And Display 3-D Models
Generate and transfer complex computer-aided drawings and specifications
Apply ergonomics, anthropometrics and proxemic considerations to a product
Construct custom furniture using advanced techniques
Design a one-off item of furniture
Design for mass production
Evaluate and participate in design industry networks
Work collaboratively on a design project
Develop and document procedures and specifications
Optimist computer numerically controlled (CNC) operations
Develop, trial and evaluate prototypes
Develop strategies for more sustainable use of resources
Apply cost factors to work practices
Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology, or equivalent
relevant employment experience.
RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING
You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. QUALIFICATION AND RECOGNITION
After completing this course, you will receive the MSF50313 Diploma of Furniture Design and Technology.
Once you have completed your studies at Holmesglen, you can further your skills in design by undertaking an advanced diploma or bachelor degree in a relevant field.
