This course focuses on further developing your skills in the design of furniture and the application of the design into a finished furniture product.

Furniture designers are experts in creating and designing furnishings, while considering both fashion and functionality.

They design interior and exterior furniture, often keeping factors like sustainability, ergonomics, customer style preferences and practicality in mind.

This course is designed to meet the expectations of the Australian furniture industry, preparing you with the skills to be job ready from day one.

You will design and test your own prototypes in dedicated computer labs and theory rooms before manufacturing them.

Course structure

To receive this qualification you must complete five core units and 18 elective units.

Elective units have been chosen by Holmesglen based on feedback from industry and staff qualifications.

If you have already completed other eligible elective units, these may be counted towards completion of this program.

Entry requirements

Successful completion of the Certificate IV in Furniture Design and Technology, or equivalent
relevant employment experience.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. Outcomes

QUALIFICATION AND RECOGNITION

After completing this course, you will receive the MSF50313 Diploma of Furniture Design and Technology.

PATHWAYS

Once you have completed your studies at Holmesglen, you can further your skills in design by undertaking an advanced diploma or bachelor degree in a relevant field.

Furniture and Upholstery Open Days

If you are curious about furniture making but not sure if it is right for you; or if you want to get the skills and industry experience to set your self up for an apprenticeship, a Certificate II might be the first step. A pre-apprenticeship program is designed to teach you the basic skills required by industry, You'll get a taste of what the apprenticeship will involve as well as what working in the field is really like. By completing a pre-apprenticeship you'll also reduce the length of your apprenticeship. Visit us on Open Day at 6.30pm for a formal presentation highlighting the unique elements and importance of each of the building trades. Following the presentation there will be a tour across each of the trades workshops with teachers available to answer any specific questions.
