Overview

The Trenching and Shoring Skill Set provides participants with the knowledge and skills needed to undertake trench support installation in a safe manner. In this program, participants will learn about soils and ground types, trenches, benching, battering, and correct installation; the removal of trench support; and directing plant while ensuring a safe working environment..

Entry Requirements

Participants must hold a White Card or have the competency of CPCCWHS1001 - Prepare to work safely in the construction industry.
Participants must complete a language and literacy test before attending class.

Recognition of prior learning

You may be able to reduce the number of units to be studied in your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. This accredited skillset is made up of 3 units of competence RIICCM210E Install Trench Support, RIICCM206E Support Plant Operations and RIIRIS201E Conduct Local Risk Control. <p>The knowledge and skills covered for each unit are:<br>RIICCM210E Install Trench Support<br>• Risks, hazards and risk control<br>• Compliance codes – excavation / plant / confined spaces<br>• Barrier management / signage / spotting<br>• Trench Shields / Battering / Soldier Sets / Closed Sheeting<br>• Trench Hazards (including ground conditions, services, property, etc)<br>• SWMS & Emergency procedures<br>• Practical activities - trenching Job set out, installation, removal, clean up<br>• Install / remove trench support and ladders safely<br>RIICCM206E Support Plant Operations <br>• Traffic control<br>• Dial Before You Dig<br>• Plant hazards <br>• Traffic control - barrier management / signage / spotting<br>• Soils – types, properties, compaction, tests<br>• Materials – types, site quality assurance, storage<br>• Practical activities with excavator and/or skid steer<br>RIIRIS201E Conduct Local Risk Control <br>• Hierarchy of control<br>• Reporting - Hazard / Incident / Near miss<br>• Practical activities to support risk control in plant operations and installation of trenching
