The Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying will give you the necessary skills to become a building surveyor or certifier with a successful career in the vital area of building compliance in Australia.

Throughout the two-year course, you will develop an in-depth technical knowledge as well as the regulatory requirements in building surveying and be able to operate independently as a para-professional within this field.

Building surveyors or certifiers check and enforce the compliance regulatory requirements and standards on buildings throughout their life.

Their roles include providing consultative advice to clients regarding compliance issues, processing planning and building applications and conducting building inspections and audits.

All staff teaching this advanced diploma have extensive, relevant industry/professional experience and vocational education teaching experience.

The facilities used by students include dedicated computer labs and access to software that is used by industry. Students may have access to a placement with an industry practitioner for up to a year during their study at Holmesglen.

This is a Free TAFE course 

Students who are eligible for Victorian Government subsidised training may not have to pay course tuition fees when they enrol in a Free TAFE course.

Course structure

The first year of the course focuses on developing the necessary skills and knowledge that a building surveying practitioner requires to deal with low rise residential buildings to three storeys high.

In second year, the student will learn the necessary competencies required for practising building surveying roles for commercial buildings up to three storeys high.

ASSESSMENT

Assessments are designed to provide learners with opportunities to demonstrate they have attained the required skills and knowledge using a range of practically based activities and tasks, as required by recognised standards.

Entry requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but learners are expected to have completed Year 12.

Prior to enrolment you will be required to complete a literacy and numeracy assessment and attend a pre-training interview. These will assist with determining your suitability to the course, verify your training plan, and identify any learning support needs.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING

You may be able to shorten the length of your chosen course by measuring skills acquired through work, life experiences or qualifications obtained from formal studies or training. AQF qualifications and statements of attainment issued by another registered training organisation will be recognised by Holmesglen. Outcomes

QUALIFICATION AND RECOGNITION

On completion, you will receive the CPC60115 Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying.

PATHWAYS

Students completing the Advanced Diploma of Building Surveying CPC60115 may receive advanced standing of up to 36 credit points (i.e. six subjects) towards the Bachelor of Building Surveying.

CAREER OPPORTUNITIES

The course is designed to meet the entry requirements of the paraprofessionals who are looking to work as building inspectors, assistant building surveyors or level 2 Building Surveyor.

Some of these roles require regulatory certification that vary from state to state and therefore State and Territory regulatory authorities (e.g. in Victoria, the Victorian Building Authority – VBA) should be consulted to confirm the requirements for these roles.

Building Surveying Open Days

Want to make sure buildings that go up, stay up? Building surveyors are often involved in projects from the early planning stages through to completion, and work closely with other allied professionals such as architects, builders, engineers and planners. Together, they ensure these buildings adhere to regulations. Visit us on Open Day for a formal a presentation at 6.30pm highlighting pathway options and career outcomes in the Building Surveying industry. Following the presentation you will have the opportunity to speak to industry experienced teachers who will give you the information and advise you about each entry stream. Registrations are essential for sessions to go ahead.
