Holmesglen graduates Veronica Foster and Kumudu Gamalath studied the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing), and have joined the aged care workforce, a vital service in the community.
Skilled workers in aged care are in high demand. Many more will be needed as Australia’s life expectancy increases and population ages.
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reports the population aged over 65 has risen by 3.5 per cent over 20 years and predicts it will grow even faster over the next decade.
What jobs outcomes are available if you undertake a course in Individual Support?
Students who complete the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) will qualify to work as an aged care worker, with scope to explore roles as personal care assistants, nursing assistants, personal care workers, or community workers.
All of these specialist roles in the Aged Care sector exist across a range of workplaces. Individual support workers offer care, inspire healthy lifestyles and person-centered support.
Veronica’s rewarding personal care assistant job in aged care
The support of family and friends led Veronica to an Individual Support course at Holmesglen and a new career as a personal care assistant.
During her course, Veronica gained invaluable skills and knowledge, including how to:
-
work legally and ethically
-
follow safe work practices
-
support independence and wellbeing
-
provide individualised and personalised support.
Veronica credits the course’s practical assessments, including a compulsory practical placement opportunity, with providing the right link between her education and future career.
“Placement was very exciting. I got to put everything into practice all that I had learned during the course, which prepared me for the workforce and gave me the confidence to seek work immediately after my placement.”
Veronica completed a four-week placement at a residential facility, giving her experience in a specialist aged care environment while she studied.
Kumudu enters the aged care sector with Individual Support course
Mature-age student Kumudu says the CHC33015 Certificate III in Individual Support (Ageing) was the perfect stepping stone to an enriching career as a support worker in Australia.
Kumudu says the Holmesglen simulation labs, plus the practical assessments, gave her an insight into the day-to-day roles and responsibilities of an aged care worker.
During her practical placement, Kumudu worked alongside a personal care assistant, helping aged care residents living in dementia and palliative care settings. Her daily roles included bathing and dressing, checking blood pressure and temperature, and monitoring client oxygen levels.
“I am very happy to say that immediately after completing my placement I was able to secure employment at Regis Aged Care in Malvern East, in the position of Assistant in Nursing (AIN)/Personal Care Attendant (PCA) Advanced."
