An optional 10-day Japanese study tour is giving our travel and tourism students a window into their future global careers.
Holmesglen’s buddy program with Japan’s Rusutsu Resort is providing students with the opportunity to venture to the Land of the Rising Sun and complete practical work placements.
To travel is one of life’s most fulfilling activities. It can be just as rewarding for travel and tourism operators who are responsible for creating memorable experiences for their customers.
SIT50116 Diploma of Travel and Tourism Management with SIT50216 Diploma of Holiday Park and Resort Management is a one year course that gives students the skills to provide these services.
India Flukes, Rebecca Roycroft, Lisa Willers, Velvet Vandersluis and Ellen Boussounis undertook their placements in Hokkaido, where they gained experience in an overseas workplace.
What travel and tourism jobs did our students undertake?
The students worked with a Rusutsu Resort employee (buddy) across different work departments, including the hotel’s retail store, ski school and hospitality areas. Our students also helped staff to assist English-speaking guests.
“We helped customers with directions, and by giving them information on ski hire and the cost and timing options of ski and snowboard lessons,” says Lisa.
What skills did they gain?
“The buddy program enabled me to foster both my personal and professional connections, which will greatly assist with any future ventures,” says Rebecca.
Our diploma course prepares students to explore future travel and tourism jobs such as a travel agency manager, tour operations manager or visitor information centre manager. In the classroom, students study units that include airline reservations, international fares and ticketing, customer service, sales, as well as resort management.
The optional Japan practical placement allowed our students to apply real-world learning to the skills they gained at Holmesglen.
“It’s amazing to be able to learn about and experience different cultures; it broadens our horizons and can change our world for the better,” says Lisa.
