As a sports media student, Ben Gibson knows that he is at the starting line of reaching his goals. However, his motivation is fixed. He realises his Holmesglen course represents much more than just new skills, it provides an opportunity and the excitement of what could come.
"I think the best thing about the course is the opportunity it presents. You don't get hand-fed anything in life, but the assignments allow you to go and get real world experience if you are willing to work hard," he says.
Sports media was a simple choice for Ben. It combines his two loves, and he acknowledges when you're passionate, it's easy to immerse yourself in your education. Since joining Holmesglen, Ben has interviewed athletes and sporting identities such as, Trent Cotchin, Dyson Heppell, Warwick Capper, Samantha Lane, Neroli Meadows, Hamish McLachlan, and Madi Robinson.
"On the back of this, I continue to learn and develop a range of invaluable skills that will hopefully hold me in good stead for the future."
The best time is the present. Ben has used this proactive mindset to undertake a range of important work experience roles. He has logged match highlights for AFL Media, and this year has developed his skills in a range of new tasks. Ben helps Champion Data compile statistics, works on a live sports panel show (That's Good for Footy) and has just accepted a role writing VFL player performance reports for Melbourne Football Club.
"To have any sort of success in the industry you must be committed. Commitment really is the key from my perspective. There are a lot of people out there who want the same job as you, so you have to work harder than everyone else to ensure if the opportunity presents itself, you will be the chosen one," Ben says.
For the moment, Ben recognises that it's a matter of taking it one step at a time and as long as you're always working hard, the future will beam at its brightest.
