Leon Sjogren believes the journey from student to professional is a matter of accepting opportunity rather than awaiting chance. Passion is nothing without pursuit, and Leon knows his pathway from the classroom to workforce has come from effort more than desire.
Currently, Leon (pictured third from top left) works as Executive Producer of leading Fox FM morning show, 'Fifi, Dave, Fev and Byron'. If his present role is point B, Holmesglen represented point A, where he explored his radio interests and developed his skills.
"Holmesglen was the first educational step into my broadcasting career. At the time, I wasn't sure if TV or radio was the right fit for me, so the broadcasting course gave me ample opportunities to get a feel for both and decide that radio was the correct path to follow," he says.
Since graduating from Holmesglen, Leon has immersed himself in the industry, working a variety of jobs in the industry. Previously, he worked as a producer for Southern Cross Austereo programs, 'Fifi and Jules' and with Sydney's 2Day FM on 'The Dan and Maz Show'. Leon is keen to point to volunteer work as the perfect opening for radio students to begin their careers while they study.
"For example, SYN radio is a fantastic place to get hands-on experience and meet tonnes of likeminded people with the same interests in the media," he declares.
Leon joined the Fox FM breakfast team at an important time. Shortly after receiving his role, 'Fifi, Dave, Fev and Byron' had moved for number six to the number one FM breakfast show in the official radio survey.
In his time away from the office, Leon also hosts a podcast series, 'Am I Funny?', as he prepares to delve into stand-up comedy. He has interviewed a host of notable comics, which include Wil Anderson, Merrick Watts and Mick Molloy.
Leon has also returned to Holmesglen as a guest speaker, where he has passed on his industry advice to the current radio class. Going forward, like the industry he works in, he is excited by new possibilities.
"I want to continue pushing radio shows to explore. I want to push them into cross platform content with digital and social."
